Linkevičius receives the new Ambassador of Italy, emphasizes the importance of solidarity
On 21 November, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the new Ambassador of Italy to Lithuania Francesco Fransoni to discuss close ties between Lithuania and Italy, and their versatile cooperation.
The Foreign Minister thanked Italy for its contribution to strengthening security in the Baltic region and highlighted Lithuania’s efforts to contribute to the reduction of threats from NATO’s south.
“Since the very beginning, Lithuania has participated in the EU-led Naval Operation SOPHIA that aims to reduce Mediterranean migration flows. In addition, this year we have strengthened our contribution to this operation by sending two vessel inspection teams. We also take part in international missions and operations in Mali, the Central African Republic, Iraq, and Afghanistan,” said the Foreign Minister.
Lithuania’s Foreign Minister also ensured that Lithuania should make a solidarity contribution to the effort to solve the migrant crisis. “We understand Italy’s burden and do as much as possible to transfer asylum seekers from Italy to Lithuania.”
The Ambassador of Italy Francesco Fransoni presented his letters of credence to the President of Lithuania on 9 November.
