The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania has allocated EUR 20 thousand in humanitarian aid to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (OHCHR).
The OHCHR was established in 1950 and is mandated to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide.
The number of refugees and displaced persons has grown rapidly around the world over the recent years. We are facing challenges related to providing assistance quickly and efficiently to those in need.
In 2017, the OHCHR will continue to provide support for countries facing political and security challenges. It will provide legal assistance, help protect children, the elderly and people with disabilities, as well as prevent sexual violence. The refugee program and projects for temporarily displaced persons and people who have lost their home will receive the most funding. The aid package will also include the delivery of food and water, the provision of temporary shelter, as well as health and education services.
The activities of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees are funded by voluntary contributions from UN member states. Only small part of funds will be allocated from the UN budget.
In 2016, Lithuania allocated EUR 50 thousand in humanitarian aid to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for Afghanistan and Syrian refugees currently living in Turkey.
