Reinstatement of the Lithuanian Citizenship
FAQs regarding Reinstatement of the Lithuanian Citizenship
My ancestor(s) lived in the territory of Lithuania and left it the beginning of the 20th century. Am I eligible for reinstatement of the Lithuanian citizenship?
The Lithuanian Law on Citizenship states that persons who were citizens of the Republic of Lithuania until 15 June 1940 and their descendants, who have not yet acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania have an indefinite right to reinstate citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, irrespective of the country in which they reside – in the Republic of Lithuania or another state. However, the Republic of Lithuania restored its statehood on 16 February 1918 and that means that you are eligible for the Lithuanian citizenship only if your ancestor(s) was/were Lithuanian citizen(s) at any time between 16 February 1918 and 15 June 1940. Persons who left Lithuania before 16 February 1918 most probably have not held a citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania.
My ancestor(s) was/were born and/or lived in the territory of Lithuania between 1918 and 1940 and I have proving documents. I this documentation sufficient for applying for reinstatement of the Lithuanian citizenship?
The Lithuanian Law on Citizenship states that persons who were citizens of the Republic of Lithuania until 15 June 1940 and their descendants, who have not yet acquired citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania have an indefinite right to reinstate citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, irrespective of the country in which they reside – in the Republic of Lithuania or another state. That means that to implement this right a person needs to prove that his/her ancestor(s) was/were citizen(s) of the Republic of Lithuania (not only was/were born or lived in the territory of Lithuania); therefore, a person needs to present documentation that directly indicates the Lithuanian citizenship of the ancestor(s) or implicitly proves it.
I wish to reinstate my Lithuanian citizenship, but I do not want to renounce my current citizenship. Am I eligible for dual citizenship?
If a person, when filling in the application for the reinstatement of the citizenship of the Republic of Lithuania, indicates in the MIGRIS system that he/she will come to the consular post to submit the originals of the uploaded documents, the Migration Department will perform a preliminary assessment of the documents. If there are no deficiencies, the Migration Department will send a message to the person via MIGRIS stating that the person must personally visit the Consulate within 4 months and submit the originals of the uploaded documents. Only upon receipt of such notification will the person be able to register for the visit to the Embassy.
Does the Embassy keep the original documents that I submit during my appointment to the Embassy after the Migration Department has performed a preliminary assessment of my application submitted via MIGRIS?
No, during your visit the consular officer will check/verify the original documents you brought and will return them back to you.
