30K tribute relay run in Washington D.C. to commemorate 30 years anniversary of Freedom Defenders' Day

On the 10th of January, the Embassy of Lithuania in Washington D.C. organized a tribute relay run dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Freedom Defenders’ Day.

To commemorate the tragic events of January 1991, when Soviet tanks attacked civilians defending strategic institutions in Vilnius, participants ran 30 kilometer distance passing Lithuanian flag to one another, making a symbolic journey through 30 years of our protected freedom. The relay run started at the U.S. Capitol and the flag successfully reached and was raised at the Embassy of Lithuania.

“We must always be ready to protect our freedom – today just as thirty years ago. The courage and determination of the Freedom Defender’s from January events of 1991 reminds us once again, that democratic values must be constantly protected” – said Dovydas Špokauskas, Charge d‘Affaires of the Embassy of Lithuania.

We are really grateful to all participants for making this relay run a success!
