Ambassador Gediminas Varvuolis expresses his deep condolences on the passing of Vytautas Victor Lapatinskas, a prominent figure in the Lithuanian American community and long-standing Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Washington State. On April 21, Victor Lapatinskas would have turned 100.
“Vytautas Victor Lapatinskas was a beacon of the Lithuanian American community and a long-standing Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Siettle, Washington, who made a significant contribution to strengthening ties between Lithuania and Washington, fostering Lithuanian identity, and promoting Lithuania’s name. We are grateful for his boundless dedication and meaningful work for Lithuania — Lapatinskas’ legacy and bright memory will remain forever in our minds and hearts. I extend my sincere condolences to Lapatinskas’ family and loved ones during this difficult time”, said Ambassador Varvuolis.
Born in 1926 in Varniai, Lithuania, Mr. Lapatinskas and his family fled westward during the war, later emigrating to the United States in 1949. He settled in Chicago, where he studied architecture at the University of Illinois. In 1961, he moved to Seattle and spent 30 years working at Boeing.
In 1994, he was among the initiators of the Baltic Studies Program at the University of Washington, where he also served on the Scandinavian Studies Advisory Board and supported Scandinavian & Baltic Studies Funds.
Appointed Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Washington State in 2001, he represented Lithuania in Seattle for more than two decades, strengthening ties between Lithuania and the United States.
Mr. Lapatinskas was a founding member of the Lithuanian Community chapter in Seattle and an active supporter of Lithuanian cultural and educational life, including the Seattle “Linas” Lithuanian school and Lithuanian-language media in the US. His lifelong dedication to preserving Lithuanian identity abroad leaves a lasting legacy.
For his service, he was awarded the Medal of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Volunteers by President Valdas Adamkus in 2001, the Officer’s Cross of the Order “For Merits to Lithuania” in 2006, and the “Star of Lithuanian Diplomacy” in 2021.
