AMERICAN, JAPANESS COMPANIES SUBMIT PROPOSALS REGARDING THE VISAGINAS NPP

1 June, 2011. The Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania announces that competitive proposals from the potential Strategic Investors in the Visaginas New Nuclear Power Plant (NNPP) Project have been received from Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy Limited and Westinghouse Electric Company.


“Proposals received from the international companies with nuclear power generation expertise  exemplifies that a milestone towards the construction of the Visaginas NNPP has been achieved and indicates that this Project, which is of importance to the entire Baltic Region, is at a very mature stage”, -  said Arvydas Sekmokas, Minister of Energy. 
According to Mr. Sekmokas, the Tender Commission will review and assess proposals together with representatives from the Visaginas NNPP project’s Regional Partners – Estonia, Latvia and Poland. The potential Strategic Investors will present their proposals this month. Further, consultations are to be held with the European Commission. 
“The proposals are being assessed and the Strategic Investor shall be selected this summer. Following selection of the Strategic Investor, the Concession Agreement will be finalised ,”- told Minister of Energy. The interest to take part in the tender was expressed by other companies having experience in nuclear energy field.
The regional Visaginas NPP Project is one of the most advanced new nuclear developments in Europe. The preparatory works of the Project have already been completed, including environmental impact assessment and site suitability evaluations, the results of which have been obtained positive IAEA evaluations.
