Commemoration of the Day of the Defenders of Freedom

To remember and honor those killed and injured during the attack by the Soviet Army on peaceful civilians in January 1991, the screening of the movie “Vytautas Landsbergis - the Path to Freedom” was organized at the Embassy on January 13. The following day, the Embassy staff and Lithuanian community participated in the Tribute Run.

The screening of the movie at the Embassy was followed by a discussion “Not Alone on the Path to Freedom” with the participation of Deputy Director of Broadcasting Board of Governors Jeff Trimble, who in 1986-1991 worked as the U.S. News Moscow bureau chief, and with the participation of Executive Director of the Strategic Studies Center in Moscow and Visiting Fellow at Hudson Institute Andrei Piontkovsky. The discussion was moderated by Mr. Viktoras Nakas, who in 1987-1991 managed The Washington branch of the New York-based Lithuanian Information Center.

The speakers shared their insights and their personal experience about the support from the international community, including that of Russian people, to Lithuania’s fight for freedom after attempted Soviet coup in January 1991.
