EMANUELIS ZINGERIS, ILEANA ROS-LEHTINEN DISCUSSED BELARUS’ NPP
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Chairwoman of the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs promised to look into the matter of Lithuania’s concerns related to Belarus’ plans to build a nuclear power plant not far from Vilnius according to Emanuelis Zingeris, Chairman of the Seimas Foreign Affairs Committee, who is in the U.S. on a visit.“Mrs. Ros-Lehtinen took special interest in the plans of Belarus to build a nuclear power plant 30 kilometers from the Lithuanian border and 50 kilometres from the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, and by corresponding Belarusian-Russian agreements on the issue,” said Zingeris.
At the meeting, Zingeris noted thatt no answers had been received to the questions about impact of these new nuclear plants on the environment.
"The greatest concern is caused by the fact that the reactors which are planned to be constructed near the border of Lithuania, are called experimental. They can cause damage to the ecosystems of the Neris and Neman rivers," added Zingeris.
