First time in history the US Department of State and partners - the Embassies of Lithuania, Japan and Israel hosted Yom HaShoah
On April 20, 2017, first time in history the the US Department of State and the Embassies of Lithuania, Japan, and Israel hosted Yom HaShoah - the Holocaust Remembrance day commemoration event dedicated to the memory of the Righteous among the Nations Japanese diplomat.
The event honored the legacy of Mr. Chiune Sugihara, Japanese Consul to Lithuania from 1939-1940, who saved the lives of some 6,000 Jewish refugees by issuing transit visas to Japan. The keynote speaker for the program was Mr. Leo Melamed of Chicago, who survived the Holocaust thanks to Consul Sugihara. The film Persona non Grata was screened about the story of the Consul’s efforts. Mr. Cellin Gluck, the film’s director, attended and engaged in a question and answer session after the screening.
