Hundreds join Freedom Way DC to support people of Belarus
The "Freedom Way DC" campaign to support the people of Belarus in their struggle for freedom took place in the U.S. capital today. Hundreds of people from Lithuanian and Belarussian diasphoras in the U.S and representatives of the country's civil society together with other members of the community supporting the protesters in Belarus gathered at the Lithuanian Embassy in Washington, DC and joined the event that also took place in many other parts of the world.
The "Freedom way" action was inspired by the event of August 23, 1989, when two million Lithuanians, Latvians and Estonians formed the "Baltic Way" - a chain of people stretching for 420 miles and connecting the capitals of three countries. It was an expression of a peaceful mass movement that ultimately toppled the Soviet Empire.
After the rigged August 9 elections in Belarus, when people began a peaceful struggle for their rights and the country's freedom, the movement started in Lithuania to commemorate the anniversary of the "Baltic Way" with an action of support to the peacefull protests in Belarus.
The participants came to the Washington, DC event wearing national colors of Belarus and the Baltic States and carrying banners supporting the strugle for freedom of the Belarusian people.
As the event took place during the COVID 19 virus pandemic, people observed social distancing rules, wore protective gear.
