IN WASHINGTON, D.C., LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER HEEDS TO THE NUCLEAR PROJECTS THAT ARE BEING DEVELOPED AT THE LITHUANIAN STATE BORDERS
On 18 November at the meeting with the U.S. President Barack Obama’s adviser and the White House Coordinator for WMD Counterterrorism and Arms Control Gary Samore in Washington, D.C., Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius emphasized Lithuania’s concern about the planned construction of possibly unsafe nuclear power plants at the country’s state borders. During the conversation, E.Ignatavičius stressed that Lithuania was concerned about the planned construction of nuclear power plants in Belarus and in the Kaliningrad region, and called on neighbouring countries to comply with the transparency obligations to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and those under the international Espoo Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context.
G.Samore assured that the U.S. administration understood Lithuania’s concern about the development of nuclear projects in its neighborhood.At the meeting, the interlocutors discussed other issues of nuclear safety and the Lithuanian-American cooperation to develop new mechanisms for the prevention of spread of nuclear materials.
