IN WASHINGTON, DC, LITHUANIAN FOREIGN VICE-MINISTER DISCUSSES ISSUES OF STRENGTHENING DEMOCRACY WORLDWIDE

On 17 November, Lithuanian Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Evaldas Ignatavičius who is paying a working visit to Washington, D.C., members of the Governing Council of the Community of Democracies, representatives of the U.S. administration and non-governmental organizations discussed issues of strengthening democracy worldwide. At the meeting, E.Ignatavičius and other high-ranking representatives from 20 countries discussed results of the organisation’s missions to strengthen democracy in Tunisia and Moldova, and new initiatives. The Vice-Minister stressed that Lithuania would actively support the implementation of the goals - to increase the organization’s operational efficiency and to attract new members – which were formulated during the Democracies Ministerial Meeting in Vilnius that concluded Lithuania’s Presidency of this organization.

“In order to remain effective, the Community of Democracies has to deal with real challenges to democracy,” said E.Ignatavičius.

In Washington, D.C., he also met with Nigerian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Viola Onwuliri and discussed with her perspectives for development of bilateral relations and economic ties, and cooperation in international organizations.

In Washington, D.C., E.Ignatavičius also spoke about the need to strengthen democracy throughout the world with foreign policy advisor to the U.S. President Samantha Power, Senior Advisor to the Secretary for Civil Society and Emerging Democracies Tomicah Tillemann, Ambassador Suren Badral of Mongolia, which took over the Presidency of the Community of Democracies from Lithuania.
