LITHUANIAN FOREIGN MINISTRY’S STATEMENT REGARDING THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION

On 17 March, the UN Security Council adopted the resolution, setting out the requirements and sanctions against Muammar Gaddafi’s regime and measures, which the international community has to apply when solving problems in Libya. The resolution approved the no-fly zone over Libyan airspace, arms embargo, and freeze on the assets belonging to the Libyan government in foreign countries. Lithuania welcomes the provisions of the UN resolution and takes part in the discussions of NATO and the EU on the implementation measures of the resolution.

Last week, at NATO’s defence ministers meeting Lithuania offered using NATO’s strategic airlift initiative’s flight hours to carry out the humanitarian and evacuation operation. Lithuania’s possible participation in implementing other measures of the UN resolution will be decided in consultation with allies and partners.

Currently, the Lithuanian army has been granted by the Seimas (Parliament) a mandate for the participation of military units in international operations in the Balkans, Central and South Asia, South Caucasus and the Persian Gulf region.
