LITHUANIAN TRANSPORT MINISTER TO SPEAK AT THE EUROPEAN INSTITUTE
On Friday, January 20th, The European Institute, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania, will hold a special meeting of the Roundtable on Transportation and Infrastructure with The Honorable Eligijus Masiulis, Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania. Mr. Masiulis and a high-level delegation from Klaipėda Port Authority and Lithuania Railway will discuss: Connecting Europe: A Lithuanian Perspective As governments on both sides of the Atlantic look to transportation and infrastructure projects to leverage economic growth and job creation, Lithuania's ambitious development of an integrated multi-modal transportation infrastructure offers a particularly instructive template, and is integral to the European Union’s Trans-European Transport Network. Investment in the transport sector is a priority for the Lithuanian Government, as activities from this sector generate 11.5 percent of Lithuania’s GDP. Minister Masiulis will offer his perspective on Lithuania’s concerted push to become a key European transit hub, including high-speed rail projects by RailBaltica to create East-West and North-South corridors and the important role that the port of Klaipėda plays as one of the beach heads in the Northern Distribution Network supplying NATO’s ISAF operations in Afghanistan. Appointed Minister in 2008, Mr. Masiulis is the leader of the Liberals’ Movement political party. A member of the Seimas, Lithuania’s Parliament, since 2000, Mr. Masiulis has also served as a Member of the Council of Klaipėda Municipality, as well as Counselor to the mayor of Klaipėda. Mr. Masiulis holds a Master’s degree in political science from Klaipėda University.
The meeting will be held on Friday, January 20th, from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. in the Crentz Room of the Cosmos Club, located at 2121 Massachusetts Avenue, NW. Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m.
