MFA STATEMENT ON THE STATUS OF PALESTINIANS AT UNESCO
Lithuania has always consistently aimed and will aim to have a single EU position regarding the status of Palestinians at international organizations. As the EU failed to establish a single position regarding this issue, we have voiced our national position together with such EU member states as Germany, Sweden, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Lithuania’s position is that the request of Palestinians for full membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is premature. This will hardly contribute to a prompt solution to a Palestinian problem. This step will rather hinder international efforts to achieve a prompt and long-lasting solution that would be acceptable to all partners in the region and that would ensure peace and stability in the region. Moreover, it will politically and financially weaken UNESCO itself.
Lithuania has always supported and will support the co-existence of two states - the State of Israel and a democratic Palestinian State – living peacefully and safely side by side.Lithuania annually implements at least one development cooperation project with the Palestinian Authority in the fields of capacity-building, development of non-governmental organizations, etc. This year, the Government of Lithuania recognised Nabil Darwish Al Wazir as Head of the Palestinian General Delegation in Finland.
