MINISTER OF ENERGY OF LITHUANIA WILL DISCUSS IN WASHINGTON LITHUANIA’S PATH TO ENERGY INDEPENDENCE

The European InstituteOn  May 13th, The European Institute, in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania, will hold a special meeting of its Roundtable on Energy and the Environment with The Honorable Arvydas Sekmokas, Minister of Energy of the Republic of Lithuania.  Mr. Sekmokas will discuss Baltic Energy Security and Lithuania’s Path to Energy Independence.Since joining the EU and NATO in 2004, Lithuania remains completely dependent on imported natural gas and continues to import a majority of its electricity.  However, together with its Baltic neighbors and the European Union, Lithuania has made considerable strides towards the integration of its energy sector with the broader EU market. Mr. Sekmokas will offer his perspective on Lithuania’s ambitious efforts to shed the label of "energy island" by securing new and renewable sources of energy

 hrough the construction of a new nuclear power plant at Visaginas; plans for building an LNG terminal to minimize reliance on Russian gas and the potential of shale gas extraction to meet his nation’s energy demands. Mr. Sekmokas will also assess the progress in implementing the EU “unbundling” directive and furthering integration into European energy networks.
Before Mr. Sekmokas assumed his current role in 2009, he took leading positions in the Lithuanian IT industry and was a Vice-Minister in the Ministry of Economy between 1991 and 1992. 

The meeting will be held on Friday, May 13th, from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. in the Powell Room of the Cosmos Club, located at 2121 Massachusetts Avenue, NW.  Registration will begin at 8:00 a.m.
