ON SPEAKER OF THE SEIMAS AGENDA: SUPPORT FOR LITHUANIA'S POLICTICAL AND ECONOMIC INTERESTS, MEETINGS WITH LEADERS OF CONGRESS, POLITICIANS AND LOCAL LITHUANIANS
Irena Degutiene, Speaker of the Seimas (Lithuanian Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania will be visiting United States of America with her delegation on Sept. 14-18. The Speaker will participate in meetings in Washington, DC and Chicago during her visit in the U.S. During these meetings Degutiene will strive for political and diplomatic assistance from the U.S. on important to Lithuania projects and for a closer mutually beneficial economic cooperation.
In Washington, DC the Speaker of the Seimas will meet with Hon. John Boehner, Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Congressional committee leaders, Senators, members of the Congress and Hon. Madeleine Albright, former United States Secretary of State. Degutiene will also participate in the Parliamentary Forum organized by the Community of Democracies where she will deliver remarks: "Eastern Europe: how to overcome the geopolitical crossroads?" Speaker Degutiene will participate in the celebration of 20th anniversary of Ukraine's independence and will meet with Lithuanians in Washington, DC and Chicago. Meetings with the Mayor of Chicago and other politicians are scheduled for this visit as well.
According to Speaker of the Seimas, "Lithuania and the U.S. share all-encompassing political relations. However, this cooperation should be strengthened by mutually beneficial economic relations, investment projects, sharing of experience and technology in the energy sector," Degutiene said.
Speaker of the Seimas claims that meetings with the U.S. Congressional representatives and leaders of committees are always useful to Lithuania, especially with the regard to the future projects and energy independence-building. "We hope to hear that U.S. Congress supports the most important Lithuania's foreign and security policy priorities - projects, which will reduce Lithuania's energy dependency from one supplier, also projects, which will increase NATO's political visibility in the region and induce joint investments," Degutiene said.
Speaker of the Seimas will return to Vilnius on Sep. 19.
