RADIATION DETECTION AND INVESTIGATIVE TECHNIQUES TRAINING AT THE NUCLEAR SECURITY CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE
Lithuanian Nuclear Security Centre of Excellence (NSCoE) at the Lithuanian Border Guard School in Medininkai is hosting one week training on Radiation Detection and Investigative Techniques (RDIT) starting on 26 November. The training is jointly taught by experts from U.S. Energy Department National Nuclear Security Agency Second Line of Defense (SLD) program and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The law enforcement officers from various Lithuanian agencies, including Customs, State Border Guard Service, Security Department, Fire and Rescue Department, Police, are participating at the courses. Among other subjects of the courses, the participants had training on Mobile Detection System (MDS), which consist of radiation detection technologies in the form of vans, backpacks, and handheld devices. Two such MDS were donated by SLD program in the beginning of November to Lithuanian Customs.
Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs actively supports the activity of the Nuclear Security Centre of Excellence by facilitating the cooperation with foreign partners. RDIT training is one of the elements of the transatlantic cooperation strengthening national anti-nuclear-smuggling capabilities.
Successful activity of the NSCoE will contribute to Lithuania’s preparations for the next nuclear security summit to be held in 2014 in the Netherlands. On November 27-28 in Istanbul the Lithuanian delegation from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated at the first preparatory Sherpa meeting of the 2014 Hague Summit.
