Seimas delegation will emphasize transatlantic unity in the face of Russian aggression at meetings in the US Congress
A delegation of the Lithuanian Seimas, composed of members of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the National Security and Defense Committee, will visit Washington, DC on February 1-4. In the United States, the delegation is scheduled to meet with members of the U.S. Congress, State Department officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations, and the think tank community.
Seimas delegation is comprised of Ms. Laima Liucija Andrikienė, Chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, Mr. Laurynas Kasčiūnas, Chairman of the National Security and Defense Committee, Mr. Jonas Jarutis, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas and member of the National Security and Defense Committee as well as of Mr. Giedrius Surplys, Deputy Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. At the meetings in Washington, DC there are plans to discuss opportunities to expand and deepen cooperation between Lithuania and the United States, especially in the security area and in particular by ensuring the presence of US forces in Lithuania. Discussions will involve the preparations and coordination of a joint response to hybrid threats in our region, countering Russia's possible military aggression in Ukraine and measures to prevent Russian threats in the wider context of European security and stability. There are also plans to discuss the implementation of sanctions against the Belarussian regime, the response to Chinese political and economic pressure, and other bilateral and multilateral issues.
The visit is taking place during the symbolic anniversary year for Lithuania and the United States of America - 100 years ago, our countries established diplomatic relations.
