SPEAKER OF PARLIAMENT ROUNDS UP US VISIT IN CHICAGO

Lithuanian Seimas speaker Irena Degutiene rounded up her working visit to the United States in Chicago where she met with City Mayor Rahm Emanuel, former White House chief of staff to the current US president, and the local Lithuanian community. In a meeting with the mayer of Chicago on Septermber 16, Irena Degutiene invited him to arrive to Vilnius with the US business mission this autumn. "Lithuanians have become an inseparable part of Chicago," Degutiene said during the meeting. The Seimas speaker reminded the Chicago mayor of the Lithuanian diaspora's concern about preserving the Lithuanian identity, cultural heritage and education and asked him to pay proper attention to the Lithuanian community in Chicago. "I asked the mayor not to harm the Lithuanians," Degutiene joked after the meeting with Mayor Emanuel.

On September 18, the Seimas speaker attended the Holy Mass celebrated by priest Antanas Saulaitis and met with the local Lithuanian community in the Lithuanian World Centre. Degutiene asked the US Lithuanians to support Lithuania in the key projects related to energy independence, NATO's visibility in the region, investment and others. The meetings also focussed on such issues as dual citizenship, which is particularly important for the emigrants of the latest wave.

"Lithuanians will stay Lithuanians for ever, no matter where they live. Lithuania will also be your homeland, whenever you come back to it. You are the children of the Lithuanian land and no laws will change it," said Degutiene.
