THE MFA IN COOPERATION WITH THE MEDIA OF LITHUANIANS LIVING ABROAD FOSTERS LITHUANIAN NATIONAL IDENTITY AROUND THE WORLD
The Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs supports the media of Lithuanians living abroad as much as possible and aims to help Lithuanians around the world foster their national identity and the Lithuanian language, join communities, and organize the establishment of Lithuanian schools. As Director of the Department of Lithuanians Living Abroad of the MFA Arvydas Daunoravičius said during the presentation of the new concept of the publication “Pasaulio lietuvis” (The World Lithuanian) on 22 March, the media is an important element of the communal and societal spirit of the Lithuanian diaspora.
“The Lithuanian published word has always been a key variable in a complex equation of the preservation of national identity abroad, therefore, we are glad that today we are able to contribute to the presentation of the new concept of “Pasaulio lietuvis”, A.Daunoravičius said during the event at the Foreign Ministry.“Pasaulio lietuvis” has been published since 1963 and its mission has always been to foster the Lithuanian identity, communal and public spirit, to maintain strong ties of Lithuanians scattered around the world with Lithuania, and to cast light upon activities of different generations of world Lithuanians and various Lithuanian communities.
President of the World Lithuanian Youth Association Kęstas Pikūnas, who is taking over the publishing of “Pasaulio lietuvis”, said that the purpose of the re-designed publication would be to acquaint its readers with a realistic and not exaggerated view of the world Lithuanian community life, to give a chance to understand the often distorted concept of the world Lithuanian and the importance of creating Global Lithuania.
World Lithuanian community representative in Lithuania Vida Bandis stressed the publication’s special significance in mobilizing Lithuanian communities in different countries for one common goal, which is to foster the Lithuanian identity abroad.
The re-designed “Pasaulio lietuvis” will be published in Lithuania.
