About the Day of Defenders of Freedom in Lithuania:

On January 13, Lithuania commemorates the Day of Defenders of Freedom to honor the public defense of the Lithuanian TV tower, central radio and TV headquarters, and the building of parliament in Vilnius during the events of January 1991. Soviet tanks killed 14 and injured around 1,000 unarmed civilians who stood tall defending the Lithuanian Parliament and the main TV tower.

Every year a tribute run is organized in Lithuanian cities and around the world to remember those who died and who fought for Lithuania’s freedom.

On the morning of January 13, the candle, as a symbol of remembrance, is lit on windowsills across Lithuania and by the Lithuanian communities abroad. Thousands of people put a forget-me-not flower on their chest to make a statement that they accept this gift of freedom and are thankful for the sacrifice made to grant it for them.
