The United States congratulate a historic milestone in the Baltic states' energy security
On a historic occasion of opening of the Klaipeda Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) terminal on October 27, 2014, the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaite stressed – „the capacity of the terminal will be sufficient to satisfy the needs of all Baltic States. If necessary, the Klaipėda LNG terminal can serve and fulfill about 90 percent of the gas supply needs of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. From now on, nobody will dictate us the price for gas or buy our political will’.
The Secretary of State of the United States John F. Kerry congratulated the citizens of Lithuania noting that - ‘our longstanding friendship with Lithuania is grounded in our shared support for democracy, human rights, and free markets. The opening of the Klaipeda LNG terminal represents a historic milestone in the Baltic states’ energy security. We commend Lithuania’s strong and sustained leadership and strategic vision to bring this and other critical energy diversification projects to fruition. Continued regional coordination on energy policy and realization of such critical projects are now more important than ever to ensure a secure energy future for Europe’.
‘The United States looks forward continuing our joint efforts with Lithuania, with other countries in the region, and with the European Union to further strengthen energy security in Europe. Again, congratulations on this momentous occasion’ – the Secretary John F. Kerry stressed.
