THERMO FISHER SCIENTIFIC HONORED BY THE PRESIDENT OF LITHUANIA AS KNOWLEDGE ECONOMY ENTERPRISE OF THE YEAR
Thermo Fisher Scientific has been selected as the Knowledge Economy Enterprise of the Year in Lithuania. The award was presented by Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania, during a ceremony in her office. Algimantas Markauskas, Director of Operations and Vilnius Site Leader, accepted the award on behalf of Thermo Fisher. The award recognizes Thermo Fisher’s investment in Vilnius, the company’s focus on R&D, its creation of innovative products and its successful long-term growth. Thermo Fisher opened its new Molecular Biology Center of Excellence in Vilnius to expand the company’s global bioscience business.
“We are pleased that Thermo Fisher was honored by the President of Lithuania as one of the most innovative and progressive companies in the country,” said Markauskas. “Moreover, this award is testimony to our company’s commitment to innovation and integrity. Our new Center of Excellence was opened in Vilnius this year, enabling us to showcase world-class capabilities and competencies for developing and manufacturing innovative products for life sciences.”
The annual awards honor Lithuania’s most prosperous knowledge economy companies, recognizing them as excellent examples for the country’s economy. The awards are organized by the Knowledge Economy Forum, a leading national organization that brings together politicians and representatives from universities, the non-governmental sector and outstanding business enterprises.
The new Thermo Fisher Center of Excellence for Molecular Biology was opened in Vilnius in September 2012. The Vilnius facility develops and produces molecular, protein and cellular biology products to serve the growing demand from life sciences customers throughout the world. Since acquiring Vilnius-based Fermentas International Inc. in 2010, Thermo Fisher has continued to invest in Lithuania to capitalize on the world-class educational institutions and scientific research talent in the country.
The 156,000-square-foot Molecular Biology Center of Excellence is currently home to more than four research, laboratory and manufacturing employees, with room for expansion. In addition to its geographically central location, especially for Europe and Euro-Asia, Lithuania is known for its well-established commitment to innovation, its highly skilled life sciences talent pool and its favorable economic environment.
