US EXPERTS BACK LITHUANIA'S EFFORTS TO CREATE COMPETITIVE ENERGY MARKET
Lithuania's efforts to create a transparent and competitive energy market, to have alternative gas supplies and to ensure reliable electricity production capacities of its own are seen and appreciated in Washington. Energy Minister Arvydas Sekmokas, who is visiting the United States this week, presented Lithuania's energy independence strategy to the Atlantic Council, one of the most influential non-governmental organizations. The US experts support Lithuania's goals to launch a liquefied gas terminal in Klaipeda in 2014, to link its natural gas supply system with Poland's and to consider starting exploration for shale gas, which they see as logical and plausible. The experts said that Lithuania's project to build a new nuclear power plant in Visaginas is of vital importance to the country and the whole region.
