VISAGINAS NPP SIGNED THE CONTRACT WITH THE US “EXELON NUCLEAR PARTNERS, LLC”

 On the 9th of December, Visagino atominė elektrinė, UAB (VAE) have signed the contract with the world’s leader in nuclear industry “Exelon Nuclear Partners, LLC” (ENP). The Company was selected by VAE together with all the regional partners of Visaginas Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) project Estonian, Latvian and Polish energy companies. ENP will be engaged in the project as the Owner‘s Engineer at the current stage of project development.  “We took a big step forward – one of the world leaders in nuclear industry with an extensive experience and competence joined Visaginas NPP project executors,” said Rimantas Vaitkus, the director general of Visagino atominė elektrinė, UAB. “This once again proves that Visaginas NPP project is mature and is further developed on the very professional basis”.

Cooperation with ENP, the owner-operator of the largest nuclear fleet in the United States, without any doubt will help to ensure the optimal economic and engineering decisions of Visaginas NPP.

“I believe that supplementary supervision of especially qualified nuclear industry engineer at the early stage of the project will be one more guarantee that Visaginas NPP will meet all the strictest security requirements and will be build on time” – said R. Vaitkus.

Exelon Nuclear Partners, LLC is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Exelon Generation Company, LLC. At the moment Exelon operates 17 nuclear reactors in ten nuclear power plants in the USA. Twelve of the 17 reactors are boiling water reactors (BRW). This type advanced reactor (ABWR) will be built at Visaginas NPP. The other five Exelon reactors are pressurized water reactors (PWR). Exelon’s nuclear stations’ generating capacity represents approximately 20 per cent of the USA nuclear industry’s generating capacity, with the lowest cost per megawatt.

ENP, the experienced operator of BWR together with the strategic investor “Hitachi” and Lithuanian specialists will look for different engineering solutions related to design and construction of VNPP.

Currently VAE specialists are preparing contracts that regulate legal, commercial and technical fields of the project and are coordinating it with the regional partners and the strategic investor.
