Arvydas Anušauskas is an historian, politician, and author of documentaries and books on twentieth century Lithuanian history, the secret service, and the Soviet terror. Based on a variety of historical research, extensive archival sources, the latest scholarly studies, documents from Lithuanian and Russian archives and testimony from witnesses, the book tells the story of the terrible crimes committed from 1940 to 1958.
Abezė, Igarka, Vorkuta, Norilsk, Klepočiai, Červenė, Rainiai are sites of massive Lithuanian extermination. Soviet crimes against humanity varied in their methods but the effect was always the same – death by disease, hunger and unbearable labor.
This book reveals the great terror experienced by innocent Lithuania people during the Soviet era: murders, concentration camps and Siberian exile, persecution upon return from exile and the Gulag labor camps. The study confirms the most dire calculations – that one in three Lithuanian adults was a victim of genocide and terror by the Soviet occupiers.
